Adapting counselling sessions for neurodivergent clients

You may experience the world differently, and counselling can be adapted to support these differences in a way that feels safe, accessible and effective. Your needs are unique, and it is my anticipatory duty to provide care that is centred around you, making adjustments to my practice to accommodate your specific requirements.

My goal is to help you feel safe and supported in expressing your true self, to reduce the need for masking where possible, and feel that your natural behaviours and feelings are accepted and understood.

We will talk before and during our first session about what reasonable adjustments you require. Some ways I can adapt our sessions are:

  • Flexible pacing: Allowing extra time for you to process your thoughts and emotions, and adjusting session lengths if needed.
  • Structuring the sessions: Using clear session outlines, summaries and visual tools to help you organise your thoughts and keep our sessions focused.
  • Sensory considerations: Be mindful of your sensory sensitivities and minimise your potential triggers, such as reducing harsh lighting, minimising background noise, and being aware of any sensory triggers within the counselling room. The room has blinds and a ceiling light with variable brightness and colours, and a selection of lamps. The room is air-conditioned so there is some noise.
  • Clear communication: Explaining approaches, techniques and options in unambiguous language, giving you space to clarify understanding.
  • Choice and collaboration: We will work together to set goals, select techniques and decide the pace and focus of therapy.
  • Validation and acceptance: Emphasising that neurodivergence is not a disorder, and fostering self-compassion and understanding, supporting you to recognise your strengths.

By adapting counselling in these ways, you can engage in therapy safely and confidently, feel truly heard, and develop tools to manage challenges while embracing your unique strengths.
