How counselling can support neurodivergence

As an integrative counsellor, I draw on different therapeutic approaches, which is especially effective for neurodivergent clients because it allows the approach to be tailored to your unique mind, experiences and needs. There is no one-size-fits-all method — instead, we will work collaboratively to find strategies and insights that suit you personally.

Counselling can help you:

  • Understand yourself better: Explore how your neurodivergent traits affect emotions, thoughts, relationships, and daily life.
  • Manage overwhelm: Develop coping strategies for sensory overload, emotional intensity, or racing thoughts.
  • Build self-compassion: Unlearn negative messages from the past and cultivate acceptance of yourself as you are.
  • Improve communication and relationships: Learn ways to express needs, set boundaries, and navigate social challenges.
  • Celebrate strengths: Recognise the creativity, insight, and unique perspective your neurodivergence brings.

Together, we create a safe, supportive space where you can be seen, understood, and accepted. Integrative counselling helps you embrace your neurodivergent self fully, learn practical tools for everyday life, and build resilience, confidence, and emotional wellbeing.

Exploring neurodivergence without a diagnosis

Many people come to counselling wondering if they might be neurodivergent — perhaps noticing patterns of difficulty with focus, emotional regulation, sensory sensitivity or feeling “different” from others. You don’t need a formal diagnosis to explore these experiences in therapy.

Counselling can provide a safe, non-judgemental space to make sense of your thoughts, feelings and patterns at your own pace. Together, we can gently explore how your brain and nervous system may work differently, and how that has shaped your relationships, self-esteem and daily life. Whether or not you pursue a formal diagnosis and/or medication, this understanding can bring huge relief — helping you replace self-blame with self-awareness, and frustration with compassion.

As an integrative counsellor, I draw on a flexible range of approaches to support you in discovering what helps you feel grounded and understood. We can work together to:

  • Identify potential triggers and sources of overwhelm
  • Develop strategies that support your energy, focus, and emotional wellbeing
  • Unlearn messages of shame or “not being enough”
  • Begin celebrating your strengths and unique perspective

Counselling can help you connect the dots of your experience and begin to see yourself with greater clarity, understanding, and acceptance — whether or not you ever choose to seek a formal diagnosis.
